Walton Wait Home

Residence built circa 1866 for oil merchant Walton Wait [1827-1872], his wife Joanna Maria Cook [1844-1922], and children. Joanna was the youngest daughter of Tillinghast and Elizabeth (Russell) Cook and born in the "Cook House" just cater-cornered and across the street from this house. Later occupied by Mrs. Wait and her second husband, William Henry Wolfe, Sr., and then by Walton and Joanna's unmarried daughter, Bettie C. Wait [1869-1959]. The house, originally located at 1245 Ann Street, Parkersburg, W.Va., beside of Nash Elementary School, was moved in the 1920s to a vacant lot behind the home to allow space for Nash School to create a playground. This gave the house the dual address of 1225 Ann Street and 1232 Murdoch Avenue. The building was not rotated around; therefore, the back of the house became the front and faced Murdoch Avenue. Despite being placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, the house set empty for many years and finally was demolished on September 28, 2007.
